Reflections on Things That Are Important To Me

What Books Have Eagerly Awaited And Then Been Dissapointed By?

Posted on | September 17, 2009 |

I recently got the first five books from Jim Butcher’s Dresden Files for a lovely reading marathon. I love paranormal stuff, and he came so highly recommended I was champing at the bit in anticipation of a new series with many instalments to look forward to. I’ve only managed the first two and am really disappointed. I can’t figure out why they haven’t clicked with me. Have you ever had this happen with a book?

I kept reading reviews about a book called “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” that made it sound like it was brilliant.
It WASN’T, and I hate reading a whole book waiting for something to happen and nothing interesting ever does.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows by JK Rowling.
That book I was eagerly waiting to get in my hands to read and when I started to read it, I was thrilled but that thrill went right out the door by the end of the first chapter. It took me almost 15 hours, instead of my normal seven hours of non stop reading of the last book. I was bored by the time the third chapter came about. I was scratching my head about the whole book.
It was not what I had really expected from JK Rowling and this being her last Harry Potter book, I thought that she would be some serious effort into writing a fantastic ending to her series but what she gave to us instead was a waste of paper and time. It was not sadly, not that great of a book.
I was very disappointed in it totally. What a bad ending to a relative great series. It was like she was rushed to finish the series and she produced an extremely boring book to read. Even the epilogue was boring.

That Sweet Far Thing by Libba Bray.
I loved A Great and Terrible Beauty and Rebel’s Angels was decent and I was so excited for the third and final book to the series and it was TERRIBLE!
    Just horrid!
It had none of her beautiful poetry, no new ideas, the prose was overexhausted, the plot was weak and it was just sad! It ended up like the pennynovels she mocked so much.
    I was sad.
    Eldest was also a disappointment.
And Laurell K. Hamilton was great in the beginning and then she just became another smut writer. So.
I hate it when my fav authors lose their ability. It makes me so sad.

Here in Florida, we have two well-known authors who specialize in wacky, off-beat humor. Carl Hiassen is a columnist for the Miami Herald and writes what used to be sidesplitting funny novels about greedy Florida politicians, developers, and farmers, but now writes rather bland comedies that have little point.
The other Florida writer is Tim Dorsey who is a columnist for the Tampa Tribune and who used to write screamingly funny stories of Serge Storms (get it? storm surge?) but now writes mishmash that doesn’t really track anymore.
Both of these writers have led me to anticipate their next work, only to be disappointed.

Yes, which is why I stopped buying whole series when I am not familiar with the author. It hasn’t happened to me in a while, thankfully. It has also happened to me with other books as well. I now only take recommendations from one specific friend whose taste in books exactly matches mine.

1.) Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. I think it was AWFULLY anticlimactic, and it was very cheesy and predictable at the end.
2.) Specials by Scott Westerfield. I just think that it’s TOTALLY unrealistic when it comes to futuristic sci-fi.

    Breaking Dawn
Eldest-Eragon was rly good but then eldest i had to work through i haven’t bothered with the next one.
Artemis Fowl and the time paradox and the one before that were nowhere as good as any of the others.

I was in a brief correspondence with an author who enthusiastically fired off his second novel to me, asking for my opinion! My head swelled, I awaited the post, and then…gaaaah. It was awful. A Sixth Former could have done better!
