The House of the Scorpion by Nancy Farmer
Sounds a little strange, but it’s and excellent novel and a winner of three awards so you know it must have some depth to it.

Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen is a good historical fiction book. Takes place during the Great Depression. It’s probably my favorite modern day novel.
