What Are Good Books With Lots Of Symbolism And Themes Present In Them?
Posted on | December 30, 2009 |
I’m considering switching my ISU book from The Story of Edgar Sawtelle to another book since I’m having trouble finding symbolism, etc in that book. I’m sort of drawing a blank on other good candidates for books, I was thinking The Stepford Wives, but that book’s sort of dark. Do you have any suggestions of a book that’s not too long and that’s full of substance that’s not entirely plot based? (I need imagery, symbolism, literary devices, themes, etc)
Thanks!

-”Cat’s Cradle” by Kurt Vonnegut
(a short sci-fi book)
-”A Raisin in the Sun” by Lorraine Hansberry
(if you can use a short play)
-”Pride and Prejudice” by Jane Austen
(a short book also; literary devices are frequent; not as plot-driven as it is symbolic)
-”Coraline” by Neil Gaiman
(a very short ‘book for all ages’ that includes some dark doings but also many lit devices, themes, imagery etc.)
-”Where the Red Fern Grows”
-”The Red Pony” (a short story)
One more idea is to call and ask your local reference librarian about a book you can use for this purpose: not the librarian checking books out - the reference librarian. They have all the training, knowledge and tools to help you further.
Good luck on your work.

well, there are many great books with a ton of symbolism, it all depends on what grade level your looking at.
lets see, here’s a few that I thought of off the top of my head:
One Flew over the Cuckoos Nest
The Lord of the Flies
Frankenstein (aka The Modern Prometheus)
The Catcher in the Rye

Do The Secret Life of Bees please!
Its the best literacy book that EVERYONE should read at some point in their life.
It has many symbols such as:
Racism
Feminine Power
The importance of having rights
Bees and their ImPact
