NEW YORK — Was Notre Dame’s 68-56 victory against Seton Hall an NCAA elimination game? Nonsense, said Notre Dame coach Mike Brey and Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez.

“How about this being promoted as a [NCAA] play-in game?” Brey said.

“You know what? Right now nobody is going to talk about Seton Hall. Just give it a few days. Keep Seton Hall on the board. Just keep Seton Hall on the board. I know everybody knee-jjerks. Give it two days and come back and look at the big picture.”

Gonzalez also was happy to politic about his club’s NCAA tournament resume.

“I know that for some reason there’s all these gurus and experts that listen to what everybody else says,” Gonzalez said. “And they say, ‘Well, if Notre Dame wins, they’re in. If Seton Hall wins, they’re out.’ “

Gonzalez then went on to point out Seton Hall has a better RPI than Notre Dame, played a tougher schedule and had fewer bad losses.

On Feb. 3, Jeff and Dorie Christian picked up their 8-year-old daughter Ryan, their only child, from school and spent the rest of the day as a family. In their latest hometown of Independence, Mo. — Jeff is a 20-year pro hockey player now playing in the Central League — the Christians went to Walmart and watched Ryan practice with her basketball team.

“Just a nice, normal, beautiful day,” said Jeff, a 1988 second-round pick of the New Jersey Devils and now a player-assistant coach with the Missouri Mavericks.

The next day, Ryan came home early from school complaining of headaches. When her mother attempted to wake her a few hours later for a doctor’s appointment, the young girl was unresponsive. Ryan was taken to Children’s Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Mo., where doctors stabilized her and performed a CAT scan and MRI. While at the hospital, she began to suffer seizures caused by extremely high blood pressure. More tests followed until the answer finally came.

Ryan had a tumor on her adrenal gland that needed to be removed — immediately. The diagnosis was Pedriatric Adrenalcortical Carcinoma, cancer near her kidney that is considered to be a one-in-a-million case. Today, she is under the care of the renowned physicians at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital in Memphis.

DENVER — Just about every place Marcus Camby has been wants him to have a homecoming. But who is the leader in the clubhouse?

The guys he plays for now.

The center started his NBA career way back in 1996, having a two-year stint with Toronto. There’s been no word about the Raptors wanting to bring Camby back, but every other NBA team he has toiled for just might go after him when he becomes a free agent this summer.

New York, where he played from 1998-2002, is expected to have interest. So is Denver, where he played from 2002-08. The Clippers have been the most vocal in wanting to bring back Camby, but the Clippers perhaps didn’t get bonus points by dealing him last month to Portland after 1 1/2 seasons in Los Angeles.

For now, the Trail Blazers are the leader.

MACON, Ga. (AP) — East Tennessee State earned its second consecutive trip to the NCAA tournament, beating Mercer 72-66 in the Atlantic Sun Conference title game Saturday behind 18 points from reserve Justin Tubbs.

Tommy Hubbard added 14 points and tournament MVP Micah Williams had 13 for the fifth-seeded Bucs (20-14), who extended their longest winning streak of the season to six games. They were playing in their third Atlantic Sun championship game in the past four years.

The Bucs won this crown with a vastly different team than last season. East Tennessee State lost three starters to graduation and one to injury from its 2008-09 lineup.

Playing at home, No. 6 seed Mercer (16-17) lost in its first championship game appearance since 1996.

Williams grabbed nine rebounds for the Bucs, who shot 48.2 percent from the field. Isiah Brown had 12 points and Adam Sollazzo 11.

E.J. Kusnyer led Mercer with 16 points, while Brandon Moore added 13.

ETSU held James Florence and Danny Emerson, a duo that teamed for 33.6 points a game this season, to only 18. Emerson did have a game-high 13 rebounds, but also had four turnovers, mostly off ETSU’s traps when he got the ball inside.

The Bucs led 37-35 at halftime, were tied by the Bears twice in the second half and the teams exchanged the lead twice.

Mercer pulled within 62-61 with 1:44 left on Kusnyer’s off-balance 3-pointer from the left wing. But Tubbs answered 26 seconds later with a 3-pointer after double-clutching, and the Bucs led 66-61.

Emerson’s two free throws with 34.3 seconds left brought the Bears to 66-68, but the Bucs again made it a four-point margin with two free throws by Tubbs less than two seconds later.

Mercer’s last chance ended with a turnover, when Williams tipped away an inbounds pass from Florence to Emerson with 19.7 seconds left.

Mercer went 8 for 16 from the free throw line in the second half and endured a 1-for-6 stretch that prevented the Bears from tying or leading.

ETSU became the sixth A-Sun team to win consecutive championships and is the second fifth seed to do so. The Bucs are making consecutive NCAA tournament trips for the third time in program history (1989-1992 and 2003-04).

For Mets star shortstop Jose Reyes, 2009 was a disaster. He lost all but 36 games due to a hamstring injury. For 2010, though, he was supposed to be in line to prove he would still play like a superstar. The triple in his first at-bat during an intrasquad game seemed to be a harbinger of things to come. Instead, Reyes has already received his first bad news of this campaign.

The 26-year-old speedster is currently headed back to New York for further tests on what has been reported as a hyperactive thyroid.

Reyes missed Thursday’s exhibition game against the Cardinals and was scheduled to return to the lineup Friday, but was scratched when his thyroid levels were found to be abnormal. He’ll undergo a series of tests through Monday, but the results may not be known for 48 hours. Basically, Reyes is not going to be back on a field until late next week — at the earliest.

Hyperthyroidism can be treated simply with medicine, but it’s possible more drastic measures need to be taken if the problem is serious. So this could end up being something that’s simply a small bump in the road for Reyes’ 2010 season, or it could be a problem that haunts him for a while. It’s far too early in the process to make any sort of a judgment now.

Reyes hit .297 with 19 triples (good for first in the majors), 16 homers, 68 RBI, 113 runs and 56 steals in 2008. He’s a two-time All-Star. Prior to the catastrophe that was 2009, he had played in at least 153 games for four straight seasons.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Gary Williams couldn’t resist, and he shouldn’t have had to. A little over a year ago, when it seemed that his team couldn’t do anything right, couldn’t reach the end of the season without sweating out an NCAA tournament bid, didn’t seem like it belonged on the court with programs like Duke, he took it all personally and imbued his players with the same sense of resolve.

So on Wednesday night, after his team held off the fourth-ranked team in the country, avenged an earlier thorough defeat on the road, tied arch-rival Duke for the ACC championship and waded through the throng of students who had rushed the Comcast Center floor, Williams praised the trio of seniors who spearheaded the 79-72 victory and offered the back of his hand to his longtime critics at the same time.

“Those three guys are special, because they’ve all come through some things,” Williams said afterward of guards Greivis Vasquez and Eric Hayes and forward Landon Milbourne. “They’ve heard, especially last year, that they weren’t good enough. It’s nice to see that they are good enough to come through four years and win.

“We kind of stuck it to some people who didn’t have some very nice things to say,” he added.

The irony of it all, of course, was that by the time this game arrived, Maryland (now 22-7 and 12-3 in the ACC), ranked 22nd and winners of five straight, was given a good chance to beat Duke (25-5, 12-3), even though the Blue Devils had won eight straight, including a 21-point win at Cameron Indoor Stadium last month. This time, though, the Terps’ seniors, honored before their final home game, scored the first 12 points of the game as Maryland jumped ahead 7-0, 10-2 and 15-5.

They also were money in the bank at the end, particularly the volatile Vasquez, who when the teams were trading the lead back and forth throughout the final 10 minutes, managed to go out true to himself and his outsized personality. He tossed in a three-pointer with five minutes left to give Maryland a lead, launched a twisting runner on the right baseline with 3:49 left to put them ahead again — and, finally, heaved up something again from the right baseline that barely qualified as a “shot” with 38 seconds left, got it to bounce in, and gave Maryland a 73-69 cushion.
