Ben Roethlisberger, on His Best Behavior, Plays Some Football

Ben Roethlisberger acts like a guy who doesn't want to blow his second chance.EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — If Ben Roethlisberger isn’t scared straight, then at the very least he wants you, me, Roger Goodell and anybody else who might be paying attention to think he is. After an offseason that saw him accused for the second time of sexual assault and suspended by Goodell, the NFL commissioner, for his off-field behavior, the Steelers‘ quarterback has this summer shed his misanthropic reputation and, publicly at least, transformed himself into Mr. Happy.

He takes every question, eagerly and enthusiastically. He says all the right things. He asks the PR staff, when the questions stop, if there’s anything else they need him to do before he leaves. He says “Excuse me, sir,” to a reporter (who’s not THAT MUCH older than he is, by the way!!!) as he squeezes past him on his way out of the locker room. Every word and action fairly screams, “Look, Commissioner! I’m doing good, right?” And Goodell is on record as being impressed, too. The commish recently said Roethlisberger was doing everything that’s been asked of him and more in his effort to reform himself and get his suspension reduced from six games to four. Not that Roethlisberger is pressing him on that, by the way.
